  • Nickel Creek in Andy May’s Acoustic Kids – Walnut Valley Festival, 1995

A very young Nickel Creek in 1995. Joining Chris Thile (mandolin), Sara Watkins (fiddle) and Sean Watkins (guitar) is Chris’ dad, Scott, on bass. This was the third year Nickel Creek had taken part in the showcase, and Sean had participated as a solo performer in 1992. Chris won the National Mandolin Championship at the festival in 1993 – the same year Nickel Creek debuted in Acoustic Kids. Sean and Sara also scored high in the contests that year. (See article: http://andymay.com/?p=8308) Starting in 1994, Nickel Creek was on the Walnut Valley Festival roster for several years. They continued to participate in Acoustic Kids and did a lot of back-stage mentoring of younger showcase participants during that time. Some of those younger kids, who are now adults, have told us that those visits were inspirational then and cherished memories now. Thanks, Nickel Creek! Already consummate professionals by the time this video was made, Chris, Sean, and Sara went on to take the acoustic music world by storm. (http://www.nickelcreek.com) Andy gives some background as the stage crew sets the mics, then the music starts at 2:17. Filmed on the 21st November 2024 at the legendary Olympia Hall – Paris, France Avishai Cohen Trio Avishai Cohen — Double bassist, singer Guy Moskovich — Pianist Roni Kaspi — Drummer One of the most prominent singer / songwriter / composers in the 21st-century jazz world, double bassist Avishai Cohen brings his bold, powerful rhythms and enchanting melodies to the stage of Paris’s iconic Olympia Hall! Born in Israel, Cohen spent his teenage years in St. Louis, Missouri where, influenced by the art of Jaco Pistorius, he gave up his piano studies to spend more time honing his skill on the bass guitar. After studying the bass at the Music and Arts Academy in Jerusalem, he returned to America — this time in New York City — to make his name both as a solo artist and in successful collaborations with jazz legends like Danilo Pérez and Chick Corea. Now at the top of his field, he invites promising talents to perform with him and refine their gifts — like pianist Guy Moskovich and drummer Roni Kaspi, who join him here for another sold-out spectacle filled with sound and color, born from an irresistible mix of contemporary jazz and the music traditions that soundtracked Cohen’s childhood. Graded by Gregoire Lesturgie, mixed by Xavier “Waks” Bourlaud, directed by Amos Rozenberg for PARAMAX FILMS
